Who We Are

american-flag-girl.jpg The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal organization focused on serving the communities through our local councils. Since its foundation in 1882, charity has been the founding principle which drives the members and districts worldwide.

In addition to raising and donating more than $158 million to charitable needs and projects last year, our Knights have volunteered more than 70 million hours of their time to charitable causes worldwide. We undertake these charitable acts because the councils throughout the world are looking for the real needs that they can help with in their local communities.

Although our charitable acts can be innumerable due to all of the various needs throughout the world, we have created charitable partnerships that are near and dear to our members. We have created strong links with Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity. We have launched the Food for Families program and Coats for Kids which allies us with law enforcement, veterans groups and organizations such as the United Way.

In Utah we have over 3000 members that serve our communities. The Knights of Columbus has well over 1.8 million members worldwide and are committed to developing character and commitment throughout our organization through our faith in God.

The purpose of our convention is to establish a unified commitment to our acts of charity statewide as well as constructing a yearly call to the purpose of our membership toward service to all as reflected by our faith in God.

During the convention we put together a program guide that is given out to all attending members from every corner of the state. Inside the guide are advertising spots for businesses throughout the state that are showing support for the Knights of Columbus and their communities. This guide gives the Knights and their wives an opportunity to see where to shop locally while at the convention as well as where they can shop in respective communities throughout the state of Utah.

We want to take this moment to thank all of you for helping us as we continue to volunteer in acts of charity to the real needs that exist throughout or communities and state. Without your support and generosity we would not be able to make all of this great work possible.

The Knight Who Rescued Captain Phillips

Capt. Castellano and his family pose with actor Tom Hanks during filming. The new movie “Captain Phillips,” about the high seas rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips, played by Tom Hanks, will be released on October 11. A tense drama, the film is based on the 2009 hijacking of an American cargo ship by pirates off the coast of Somalia and the successful recovery effort by the U.S. Navy. The daring Easter Sunday rescue of Capt. Phillips was overseen by Capt. Francis X. Castellano, a member of the Knights of Columbus for 27 years, who is played in the movie by Yul Vazquez. In an exclusive Knights of Columbus interview transcribed below, Capt. Castellano talks about his roots in the Order through his father, who was a grand knight and general agent, and the importance of his Catholic faith in all aspects of his life, especially in tough situations as a naval officer.  Video
